The White Russian from The Big Lebowski
After disappointing at the box office, The Big Lebowski (1998) has since become a cult classic that put the White Russian cocktail back on the map. Here we recreate The Dude's standard recipe and then take it to the next level.
EQUIPMENT
- Cocktail set (includes Boston shaker, jigger, bar spoon, hawthorne strainer, fine mesh strainer, julep strainer, muddler, cocktail picks)
- Old fashioned (rocks) glass
- Double old fashioned glass
- Angled measuring jigger
- Glass container with stopper
- Sous vide machine
ORIGINAL WHITE RUSSIAN
- 2oz (60ml) vodka
- 1oz (30ml) Kahlua
- 1oz (30ml) heavy cream
- Add all ingredients to a rocks glass over ice
- Stir
- Drink
IMPROVED WHITE RUSSIAN
- 1.5oz (45ml) vodka
- 1.5oz (45ml) homemade coffee liqueur (recipe below)
- 1.5oz (45ml) toasted cream (recipe below)
- Add all ingredients to a shaker tin with ice
- Shake for 10 seconds
- Double strain into a double old fashioned glass with a large ice cube
- Enjoy!
TOASTED CREAM
- 1 pint (473ml) heavy cream
- 1/4 tsp (2g) baking soda
- Mix cream and baking soda together
- Place in zipper-lock bags or vacuum bags, remove air, and seal
- Set sous vide cooker to 180°F (82°C) and drop in bag
- Let cook for 24 hours
- Strain toasted cream to remove solids, then store in the fridge

HOMEMADE COFFEE LIQUEUR
- 1/4 cup (20g) ground espresso beans
- 2 1/4 cup (540ml) water
- 1 cup (200g) turbinado sugar
- 1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract
- 2 cups (.5 liter) dark rum
- Combine espresso grinds and 1 1/4 cup (300ml) water into a mason jar, mix and refrigerate for 12 hours, then filter out grinds
- Combine sugar and 1 cup (240ml) water in a saucepan, heat to a simmer to dissolve
- Combine cooled sugar syrup and cold brew coffee in a large jar
- Add vanilla and rum
- Shake and store in fridge
